Coalclaw was getting old but somehow that didn't really bother him. He had just made deputy, though. He was in a low dip, he could tell where he was now. His orbs flashed yellow in the shadows of an ancient oak known as Hawk tree. He looked to the sky but saw nothing, no dark dot in the blue sky to alert him to the presence of a hawk. He stood at the base of the gnarled oak, casting his gaze to the topmost branches. Ah the memories that dwelled here seemed so touchable that they seemed to hang on the branches and sway with the tall grass.
The first time he was here, he was, of course, with his sister. Their black pelts were a blur as they raced out of the Camp, away from the Elders, away from their Mentors. He was leading, then she was then he was again. It went back and forth until eventually they called it a tie but they had already arrived here at Hawk Tree. It loomed before him, taunting him, but seemed to the young Coalpaw a dark omen.
"What are you doing?" he had asked Ravenpaw, he could see that glint in her eyes. She was crazy, he was sure of it.
"What do you think?" she answered him with another question.
"It's not...logical to answer a question with another question" he had told her so matter of fact-ly.
"Of course it is" was the best reply she could muster...
He came back to the present, laughing his deep, baritone laugh. Why did he choose to miss them now? He hadn't missed his honored Father on the eve of his death, when he was standing vigil. He certainly hadn't missed his dear Sister when news reached him of her death. So why now? Because you miss them he answered himself, nodding in slight agreement....
